When Should You Have Your Brakes Inspected?

Ideally, when you have your tires rotated every six months or so, you should also get your brakes inspected. Our technicians will check your calipers, pads’ thickness and drum hardware. If your brakes parts have worn out, you may hear a screeching sound when you apply or release the brakes. Any screech, squeal or grinding sound should be investigated.

Does your brake pedal pulsate when you brake lightly? This issue is most often traced to a warped or worn-out disc. Warping can occur if the wheel is not installed properly, in which case we can tighten the lug nuts in the correct sequence. Another reason is that brakes may not be properly bedded-in or the pads may be overheated, causing an uneven transfer of friction material from pad to rotor. In this case, the best option may be to replace your brakes. Note that the brakes on vehicles equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS) will vibrate under quick braking, which is normal.

If your car pulls to one side when you brake, the front pad may be worn or malfunctioning. When the brakes feel spongy or they are hard to press down, then quite possibly there is air in the brake lines, the brake line is damaged by rust, brake fluid is low or old, cylinder is leaking or disc brake calipers are damaged due to heat.

Depending on the nature of the problem, brake service specialists in Tulsa may recommend brake repair or replacement.

Brake Repair Versus Replacement

Worn out brake rotors should be replaced or resurfaced. Resurfacing removes scratches and smooths out uneven wear patterns. For this, the rotors need to be turned on a metal grinder. If the rotors are adequately thick to handle a few passes through the grinder, repair may be a suitable option. If the rotors are severely corroded, grinding them down could make them too thin and prevent brakes from clamping down completely or cause them to warp. Replacement is also advisable if the rotors have deep scratches and have been turned a couple of times already.

Our technicians have experience servicing brakes on all makes and models of vehicles. We trace the root cause of the problem and explain it in layman’s terms to you. We can perform repair or provide quality replacements for disc brakes, drum brakes, brake pedals, power brake boosters, brake master cylinders and electronic anti-lock brake sensors.

Budgeting for Brake Repairs? Here’s What You Should Know

When planning the costs of maintaining your car’s braking system, factor in these common repairs/services:

  • Brake Fluid Checks: Replace your car’s brake fluid every one or two years. Also have the fluid levels checked routinely to top up as needed. A low fluid level may signal a leak in the brake line and create a risk of brake failure.
  • Brake Pad Service: The average brake pad life is between 25,000 to 65,000 miles. If you postpone changing your worn-out brake pads, the brake rotors will get damaged eventually. Signs that you need to replace your brake pads are: squealing/screeching noises, metallic grinding/growling or pad thickness less than ¼ inch. Your car’s dashboard indicator light may turn the brake warning light to indicate that the brake pad has worn out.
  • Brake Replacement: Any reliable Tulsa brake replacement service will inform you that your brake system is due for replacement. We alert you to issues and recommend replacement after inspecting the brake rotors during a routine or planned maintenance check-up.
